Tax tax tax (part II) howardharris 6/24/2009 11:18:10 AM
Have you have read my "Tax, tax, tax" thread? If not then no worries. Because here i want to talk about me. Well me and tax.
When people ask me what I do for a living I say I save people tax. There is no magic in that job description but unlike the majority of people in the profession I am a member of (i.e. accountancy) it is something that I have a track record of.
My wife considers that I live and breath tax (in between being a doting husband and father) and I am always thinking of ways that people can achieve this. As I said there is no magic involved.
As I mentioned above I am an accountant. I also am a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. So not only do I understand the world of business (I am self employed) I can advise on matters from preparing a set of accounts/tax return to drafting your Will. |
Tax tax tax! howardharris 6/24/2009 11:00:43 AM
We may all be familiar with the quote by Benjamin Franklin about taxes (and death). Unfortunately it’s all too true.
In your business, how often do you dedicate time to increasing turnover, to reducing your overheads, to paying the bills? Compare this to how often you look at how much tax you are paying and how to reduce it!
Where you run your business as a sole trader/partnership you will pay tax at somewhere between 21% and 41%. In a company the rate is between 41% and 48%. It is therefore no surprise that tax is usually the largest cost centre in a business and yet very little time is spent on reducing it.
Now consider the following points:
Why did I set up in business in the way that I have e.g. limited company v sole trader?
That it may cost you more running your business if you are not VAT registered and your turnover (not profit) is less that £68k.!
Have you considered claiming tax credits, setting up a childcare voucher scheme etc? |
